Periodontal diseases
Periodontal diseases are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and pose a risk to your overall health.
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection. In the mildest form of the disease, gingivitis, only the gums become inflamated. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care. Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. The bacterias stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. In most cases, with the right treatment, the periodontal destruction can be stopped, but mostly the destroyed tissue cannot be restored.
Causes of periodontal disease
The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. The composition of the bacterial plaque and the immune response of your body determine the severity of the destruction.
However factors like the following also affect the health of your gums:
Treatment of periodontal disease
Most important, a right diagnosis should be made, so that the periodontitis can be treated effectively.
In general there are surgical and non-surgical treatment procedures. In some cases, if certain bacteria are present an adjuvant antibiotic treatment may be necessary.
The surgical procedures can be done to stop the infection, but also for regenerative or cosmetic reasons.
In the case of cosmetic or plastic surgery, your smile is enhanced. For example by covering exposed rooth surfaces. Or if your teeth look too short, your smile can be made harmonious by lengthening the crowns.
In the case of regenerative surgery the lost tissue is regenerated by means of special surgical techniques.
